Internet Explorer 6 is dead. Officially

Web developers of the world, rejoice! Da: a venit in sfarsit si ziua cand s-a terminat. Cea mai mare durere de cap a mea, ca web developer (si nu cred ca sunt singur aici) e abandonata. Stiu ca Microsoft-ul nu mai ofera de mult timp suport pentru Internet Explorer 6, dar trebuia sa vina un endorser serios pentru a face pasul hotarator.

Ultimul update de la Google ne spune ca, incetul cu incetul, pe parcursul lui 2010, vor renunta la suportul pentru Internet Explorer 6 si alte browsere de teapa lui, pe Google Docs, Google Sites, Google Mail (aka GMail) si Google Calendar. Cum spuneau ei? “We will be phasing out …”; da: phasing out. Imi place exprimarea asta: phasing out. Mai jos un fragment din mail:

Dear Google Apps admin,​

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 ​as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Ca rezultat al acestui anunt, cred ca am sa incep si eu sa nu mai dezvolt site-urile si pentru IE 6, ci doar pentru browserele de mai sus. Nu sunt inca foarte sigur: ma mai gandesc. Cert este insa ca primul pas mare a fost facut! Oh yeah!
